The Diamond Necklace

“Max, do you love me?” Sabrina asked as she slowly walked down the long corridor of glass plated shop windows, longingly looking at each item she desired. Max stood beside her, his hand around her waist, also glancing at each object in the large lighted windows. His ears perked up at the sound of her voice. The words had just past by him as if they were the wind.

Realizing what his girlfriend had just said, he replied, “Of course, honey. I love you so much, I’d do anything for you.”

Sabrina rolled her eyes. It was time for her to test out his love. They walked past a jewelry store. A shining piece of merchandise caught Sabrina’s eye. “Look at that, Max. Isn’t it beautiful?” she said, staring at the exquisite diamond necklace in front of her. This was the perfect time to put her idea into action. “Do you love me enough to buy me that necklace?”

Max nearly jumped back when Sabrina asked him that question. His arm immediately fell from her waist as he glared back at her with angry eyes. “Sabrina, you know I don’t have the money for a thing like that,” he said, trying to sound as polite as possible.

“But you just said you’d do anything for me. Why don’t you buy me that necklace?” Sabrina retorted putting her hands on her hips and waiting for him to say something.

“Because it’s too expensive. I don’t know where I’d find the money for such a necklace, let alone the diamonds on it,” he answered back. Max could see that Sabrina was getting angrier by the minute. She turned away from him and began to walk in the direction towards the car. He knew that one more wrong move would send her packing. That was the last thing he wanted.

“You said you loved me,” Sabrina pouted, turning on the tears. ‘God, I hope this works,’ she thought to herself. ‘Otherwise, there goes another boyfriend that wasn’t worth it.’

“I do love you, just not enough to buy that necklace,” Max said without thinking.

Sabrina coiled her hand back and thrashed it into Max’s face. The impact left him dazed and bewildered. He had never seen Sabrina act with so much force, then realized the mistake he had made. Just as he was about to apologize to her, she had already left for the car.

Turning in the direction of the store, he walked inside and began to wander around looking for an unoccupied clerk he could ask assistance from. As he waited in line for an opening, Max looked through the bulletproof glass at the diamond necklace that Sabrina so desired. It sparkled in the bright lights of its case. He then looked at the hefty price tag, $1000.

‘I hope she’s worth it. I don’t wanna take the risk of losing this investment,’ Max thought to himself when a clerk came up to him. It didn’t take him long to have the ring packed in a box and paid for via credit card. ‘This better make her happy.’

When Max reached the car he found Sabrina sitting on the hood of the red convertible waiting for him. She quickly turned away when she saw his face and folded her arms against her chest.

“Sabrina, stop that,” Max said when he came up beside her. His arms quickly spun her around then he reached for the little box in his pocket. “Here, this is for you.”

Sabrina grabbed the box from his hands and swiftly opened it. She pulled out the diamond necklace, her eyes almost popping out of their sockets.

“Oh, my God! Max! You shouldn’t have!” she nearly cried as her arms wrapped around his neck.

“It was no trouble at all,” he replied, giving her a tight hug.

‘I guess he is worth my time,’ Sabrina though to herself.

‘I guess she is the right one for me,” Max thought at the same time.
