Chapter 5: Just
A Kiss Divine
Chance sat at the back of her physics class where she wouldn’t be bothered. It was the spot she thought was the least likely to be called on by the teacher, and she was right. The days she was in class, Chance would nod off becoming bored of all the equations that she had to take notes on. Nothing annoyed her more than doing something she thought was useless to her in the future.
Wednesday was turning out to be one of those days. As Chance took her seat at the back of the room, Brad, Paul, and Rick all walked in. The three of them sat in the front row, all in a line, and no one was allowed to get between them. The rules had been clear many times when they pushed out anyone who got in their way. Once class started, they go too wrapped up in their note taking that they weren’t a real problem.
Moments later, Scott walked in. Chance instantly felt her heart begin to beat faster. She watched his tall 6’5” body move effortlessly across the room to his seat next to Brad. He turned his head towards Chance and stared at her with his beautiful brown eyes lightly tinted with green. Scott smiled warmly at her before Brad could see, then turned back to face the board. From behind, Chance kept checking him out. His perfect muscles shown through the long sleeved dark green ribbed body shirt he wore. It seemed to match perfectly with his baggy khakis and black boots.
Chance sat back and stared at Scott. This was the first time he had become something more to look at in her eyes. She watched him, her eyes intent with capturing every single detail about him. It was the first time she noticed he was left-handed and how his hair fell just above his eyes when he leaned over to write. All these little attributes just made Scott seem so irresistible.
Chance was so caught up in her thinking that she didn’t hear the teacher’s instructions to get up and go to one of the lab tables. Brad noticed the instant he stood up that Chance was out of it. He walked over to her and stood in front of her. He snapped his fingers near her face and she instantly stood up so that the two were inches apart, face-to-face.
“What’s gotten into you?” Brad asked. “Is that big record deal cluttering up your little mind, or have you developed a sudden interest in physics?”
“Shut up, Brad,” Chance barked. She tried to push past him, but he held her back with his arm.
“Understand one thing, bitch. You might think you’re on top of the world, but you’ll never amount to anything. You’re just a stupid little girl without a family. No wonder nobody gives a rats ass about you,” he spat.
Chance was pissed. Her anger rose to the boiling point as she grabbed Brad by the balls and squeezed as hard as she could to see his face distort in pain. By now the entire class was watching them in complete silence.
“If you ever dare to say that again, I swear on my life that I will take you down. Now say you’re sorry,” she hissed.
“No,” Brad choked.
Chance squeezed even harder. “Say it.”
By now Brad’s pale white skin had turned deep red around his face and sweat dripped from his forehead. “Sorry,” he said in a weak and low voice.
Chance let go and confidently walked to her lab table. Brad breath a sigh of relief and took a few moments to recover. He walked to his lab table on the opposite side of the room with a glare in his eyes. He sat down in his chair and growled, “That bitch is going down.”

Chance waited outside in the parking lot for Scott after school that afternoon. She had to talk to him about her feelings and about what Brad was planning to do to her for revenge. She stood near her car, sitting down on the hood, and waited for a few more minutes. As other people walked past her, they shouted comments like, “Good one, Chance. Brad got what was coming to him.” Or “Damn, girl. You’re one tough chick to stand up to Brad like that.” Chance didn’t mind the attention she was getting from her classmates. She was just happy that they knew her name.
After waiting nearly half an hour after the bell had rung, Chance spotted Scott making his way to the parking lot. He carried an oversized gym bag over his shoulder, and she immediately ran over to him to see if she could help.
“Hey Scott!” Chance shouted.
“Chance!” he exclaimed once he saw her coming towards him.
“Need some help?” she asked.
“When did you become so nice to me?” Scott replied. “You never help me when I need help, and now all of a sudden you wanna help me. What’s going on?”
“Nothing,” Chance answered. She walked with him until they reached his silver Lincoln Navigator.
“I wanted to tell you that what you did today was way out of line,” Scott said calmly. “What the hell were you thinking?” he then yelled. “Do you know what Brad is going to do to you? He’s going to kill you.”
“Big shit. I had to do what I did or I’d just be letting him take advantage of me,” she argued.
“But you’re risking your life when you stand up to Brad. I have never seen you do something so stupid. Why did you all of a sudden want to do what you did?”
“My instinct was telling me to do it.”
“Why did you have to listen?” Scott shouted.
“Because it’s also telling me to do this.” Chance pushed him against his car and before he knew it, she was kissing him. Scott didn’t resist. His body told him not to. He relaxed, putting his hands around her waist and pulling her closer. Chance could feel herself letting go of all her feelings for him in that one kiss.
They let go of each other and just stared at one another for what seemed like hours. Chances reached up to Scott’s face and moved a strand of his brown hair away from his eyes. Her hand gently dropped to his cheek. He took her hand and moved it to his lips, kissing it gently. Chance smiled at the fact that he hadn’t pushed her away. Scott smiled back as he looked deeply into her eyes.
“I’m glad you acted on you instinct,” Scott whispered as he bent down for another sweet kiss.
As soon as it was over, Chance pulled away and looked around the parking lot to see if there were any people there besides them. She was relieved to see that no one was there and turned back to Scott. “Can we be together?” she asked.
“If this is what it’s going to be like, I’d risk anything and everything for it,” Scott replied.
“Me too,” Chance said. One song made its way into her thoughts. She quietly
began to sing, “Come to me now, and
lay your hands over me. Even if it's a lie, say it will be all right, and I
shall believe. I'm broken in two and I know you're on to me, that I only come
home when I'm so all alone but I do believe that not everything is gonna be
the way you think it ought to be. It seems like every time I try to make it
right it all comes down on me. Please say honestly you won't give up on me and
I shall believe.”
Chance leaned into Scott again and put her head on his chest. He kissed
the top of her hair and held her tight with his strong arms.
