Chapter
9: I Miss You
“I’m so bored,” Faith said as she focused her camera on her face. She sat
in her dark hotel room alone, depressed, abandoned. “Morgan left me so she and
Ben could go out. I feel so alone. I just wanna take out that bottle of Bourbon
in my bag and drink it all down, but I have to find out what’s going on
tonight. If I’m smashed or high, I won’t remember a thing.”
Three knocks came at the door followed by Morgan’s voice yelling, “Faith!
Open up!”
“Finally,” Faith told them camera as she turned it off and set it down on
the bed. She stood up and walked to the door. “What, Mor?”
“Come out here,” Morgan replied as she took her by the hand and dragged her
out of the room. Standing beside the door was Spaz, her face still bruised, but
it wasn’t as swollen as it had been the days before. “Somebody wants to say
they’re sorry.”
“Really?” Faith sarcastically asked. “You know what? I don’t wanna hear
it.” She began to retreat to her room again, but Morgan caught her by the arm.
“Why not?” she asked.
“Because she’s been making passes at my man!” Faith shouted, knowing it
was a lie.
“That doesn’t mean he fell for any of my tricks! He doesn’t even give a
shit about me! He wants you!” Spaz yelled back.
Faith shut her mouth, the information hitting her like a dropped brick.
“What?” she asked more confused than angry.
“He wants you. You’re the one he’s after. He barely even talks to me, and
when he does, it’s all about you,” Spaz explained in a defeated tone.
“Look, Faith, I’m so sorry. Can’t we just let this go? I don’t wanna
fight anymore. I wanna party and get high and drink with you again. Come on, we
shouldn’t be keeping this up. It only causes problems. Be the bigger woman and
forgive me.”
Faith rolled her eyes, but was soon embracing her friend for making it sound
like she was truly sorry. “I’m sorry I beat the shit out of you,” she
said.
“I deserved it,” Spaz replied.
“Okay, friends again. Now what are we gonna do?” Morgan asked.
“Why don’t we go to the show tonight? I’ve missed every single one we’ve
been to, and Darren has something planned tonight,” Faith suggested.
“That’s right! We have to go tonight!” Morgan exclaimed as she dragged
Faith into her room and began to rummage through her suitcase. She picked out
one of her favorite shirts, a shimmering leopard print halter- top, then began
searching for her black mini skirt.
“Okay, what’s this all about?” Faith asked when Morgan put her hand on her
chin and began to ponder the outfit. “Mor? Why are you picking out my
clothes?”
“Because this is a classy event. We all need to look good,” Morgan answered.
“I’m gonna be wearing something similar. Don’t worry. You won’t be the
only hot one in the arena.”
“All right,” Faith shrugged as she pushed Spaz and Morgan out of her room so
she could dress.
“Meet us in the lobby when you’re done!” Morgan yelled through the closed
door.
* * *
“You fucking lied to me!” Faith yelled as she stepped off the elevator to
find her friends wearing the same tank tops and shorts they had been wearing
when she last saw them.
“We didn’t have time to change!” Spaz replied as she took Faith’s left
arm and Morgan took her right one. They began to lead her outside, slipping a
backstage pass around her neck and leading her to the back of the arena where
security was checking everyone.
“Faith Somers,” Morgan said as she pushed Faith in front of her.
“Ah, Miss Somers. We’ve been waiting for you,” the male security guard
said as he took her backstage with him.
“Guys!” Faith hollered as she was dragged into one of the makeup rooms. She
frantically searched for her friends but couldn’t find them anywhere. Before
she knew it, a lady was beginning to do her makeup. She tried pushing her away,
but several other people showed up to do her hair and nails. “What the hell is
going on here?” she yelled above their banter.
“We were told to make you look good, and that’s it,” the woman doing her
hair replied as she finished with the eyeliner.
Faith sat back, unable to move as it was, and waited for them to finish. By the
time she was finally off the chair, her hair had been pulled back and curled,
her eyes had been darkened, and her face had been dolled up so much she
couldn’t even recognize herself, but she looked good. As she stepped out of
the room, the security guard who had taken here there grabbed her arm and
dragged her to another door.
“This way, Miss Somers,” he politely said as he opened the door. A bright
light shone on her face as she stepped inside the room. The roar of a crowd
startled her, but when she turned back to run through the door, it had closed
and locked. Faith turned around to find herself on stage with a sea of people
below her.
‘What the fuck!’ her mind screamed as she began to panic. ‘I’m not
supposed to be up here! I have to get down! I have to find an exit! Oh, God!
They’re going to kill me!’
“Ah, there she is!” Darren’s voice boomed over the PA system. Faith’s
head swiveled to see him standing in the middle of the stage with the rest of
the band. “Come over here, Faith.”
“What the hell are you doing?” she mouthed.
“You’ll see,” he replied. “Come on, have a seat.” Faith sat in the
chair set up beside him and crossed her legs.
“Now will you tell me what’s going on?” she politely asked.
“Well, I’ve got one thing to say, I love the way you look… tonight,”
Darren sang as the band began to play the old Sinatra tune.
“Some day, when I’m awfully low, when the world is cold, I will feel a glow
just thinking of you... And the way you look tonight.” Darren began to dance
around her as if he were an idiot. Faith laughed.
“Yes you’re lovely, with your smile so warm, and your cheeks so soft, there
is nothing for me but to love you, and the way you look tonight.
“With each word your tenderness grows, tearing my fear apart… And that laugh
that wrinkles your nose. It touches my foolish heart.
“Lovely ... Never, ever change. Keep that breathless charm. Won’t you please
arrange it? ‘Cause I love you ... Just the way you look tonight.”
Darren grabbed Faith’s hands and pulled her off the seat so he could dance
with her. She was giggling now, her face turning red as he twirled her around
while he kept singing.
“And that laugh that wrinkles your nose. It touches my foolish heart.
“Lovely… Don’t you ever change. Keep that breathless charm. Won’t you
please arrange it? ‘Cause I love you… Just the way you look tonight.”
Darren stopped dancing and wrapped his arm around Faith. He looked into her eyes
as he sang the last verse, “Mm… Mm… Mm… Mm… Just the way you look
to-night.”
“How could I possibly deserve something better than you?” Darren asked as
she crowd cheered loudly. “You are better than best. You’re simply amazing,
and I want you. I choose you over everybody else. I miss you. Come back.”
“Promise me one thing,” Faith replied.
“Anything.”
“Don’t ever ask me about my past.”
“I promise I’ll never ask you about your past.”
Faith smiled as she wrapped her arms around his neck and pulled him in for a
strong, passionate kiss.
