Chapter
11: Sweet Misery
The next morning, Faith found herself sprawled across a lime green couch with
Darren’s arms wrapped around her. She twisted in his direction and gently
brushed a few strands of his blond hair away from his face as he slept. With a
soft kiss on the forehead, she hoisted herself up and walked out of the waiting
room to find a coffee machine. As she wandered in her through the halls, she
found Ben sitting alone in the cafeteria nursing a cup of coffee. She walked in
and sat down across from him.
“Hey,” Faith said.
“Hey,” Ben miserably mumbled.
“You okay?” she asked.
“No,” he whimpered.
“What’s wrong?”
“Morgan,” Ben simply replied as his head slumped down.
Faith’s hand slipped over his and gently squeezed. “She’s going to be
okay,” she said. “Mor’s a tough girl. She can take anything.”
“But I saw the whole thing happen! I saw the damn cable swing and thought it
wasn’t going to hit her, but it did! Right in the arm! It knocked her down,
and she didn’t get back up! I went running, and she was laying there on the
ground, bleeding and unconscious,” he sobbed.
“Benny, don’t blame yourself,” Faith tried to comfort. “It wasn’t your
fault it happened. It was just fate. Something good is going to come out of
this, I know, so don’t worry about it.”
“How do you know?” Ben asked.
“I have experience. I’ve had plenty of fucked up things happen to me, and
things all worked out for the best,” she replied.
“Name one.”
“Well, I’ve nearly killed myself three times, but someone happened to be
there to save my ass. And then there was that thing in fifth grade, but I’m
not about to talk about it, too personal. But I learned to live life to its
fullest from that experience. And then the whole thing with Darren. I thought it
was over between us, but he totally turned things upside down. See what I mean?
Things find ways of righting themselves,” Faith explained.
“Why don’t you like talking about what happened in fifth grade?” Ben
asked.
“Like I said, it’s too personal. I really don’t wanna revisit it, that’s
all,” she replied.
“That painful, huh?”
“Yeah” Faith sat back in her chair and sighed deeply. “Why don’t we go
back to the waiting room and see if the doctor has talked to any of the guys?
Sitting around is making me anxious.”
They slowly made their way down the quiet halls and past the nurses’ desk when
Faith suddenly asked, “Do you like Morgan?”
Ben stopped as Faith continued to walk. “Wha… Wha… What?” he stuttered.
Faith turned around and said, “You heard me. Do you like my friend?”
“Is that a trick question?” he replied.
“No, I’m just asking.”
“Well, what if I told you that I did, but I didn’t want anyone else to know,
especially her?”
“Then I’d say your secret was safe with me.”
“Thanks, Faith,” Ben said as he hugged her. They began walking again when he
asked, “What about you and Darren?”
“Me and Darren? Well, you could say that we liked each other, a lot. Come on,
were you even paying attention at the concert last night?” Faith retorted.
“Ben, what am I gonna do with you?” she joked.
They soon reached the waiting room where everyone was still asleep. Faith crept
into Darren’s arms again and snuggled up against him. He groaned lightly, but
didn’t wake up to her surprise. She closed her eyes once more and drifted back
to sleep. ‘I guess I really didn’t need the coffee,’ she thought to
herself just before blacking out.
* * *
“Faith, wake up,” Darren gently whispered as he nudged her shoulder. “Come
on, Faith. They’re letting us see Morgan.”
“I’m up!” she replied, shooting out his grasp. She looked around the room
to find that almost everyone had emptied out. Leonie, Lee, and Angi were the
only three left besides Faith and Darren.
“Come on,” Leonie said as she gestured towards the door. “Ben, Karl, and
Spaz are already in her room waiting for us.”
The five of them walked down the nearly silent hall to a room at the end. Spaz
and Karl were standing outside talking lightly, and soon turned to see Faith and
the others walking towards them. Spaz smiled when Faith walked up to her.
“Did you know about Ben and Mor?” Spaz asked in nearly a whisper.
Faith shook her head knowing that if she told Spaz, she’d tell everyone else,
and Ben would be pissed at her.
“Well, go inside and find out for yourself,” Spaz replied. She pushed Faith
towards the door. Slowly, she opened it and peered inside to find Ben and Morgan
locking lips. Faith smiled, then gently knocked so not to startle them. Morgan
quickly pulled away to find her watching from the door.
“Oh, it’s only you,” she said. “Come in.”
“Mor! I’m so sorry I wasn’t there last night to help you guys,” Faith
immediately apologized when she saw Morgan’s arm in a sling above the bed and
a large bruise that ran from her cheekbone to her jaw line.
“Hey, it was an accident, and accidents happen. I hope you and Darren had a
good time last night,” Morgan replied.
Faith blushed as she recalled the night before. The second time was so much
better. It felt as if they had done it for the first time that night. The
feelings of desire had been heightened to the point that neither one of them had
ever experienced. Since the first time was so rushed and disorganized, the
second time seemed to make up for it.
“Faith, you’re turning red. What happened last night?” Morgan asked,
knowing the answer before it even came out of Faith’s mouth.
“You know exactly what happened last night,” she answered. “You always
seem to know. Just make sure that you don’t tell anyone!”
“What the hell! I’m sitting right here and I have no idea what you two are
talking about. It’s not fair!” Ben complained. “You can tell me, Faith.
You already know my secret, it’s only fair that I find out yours.”
“Jeez, what’s with everyone wanting to know my secrets?” Faith questioned.
“First it was Darren, and now you, Ben. But you’ve got a point. Just promise
me you’ll never tell ANYONE!”
“Hey, I trust you, you should be able to trust me,” he replied. “I promise
I’ll never tell anyone.”
“Okay, Darren and I had sex last night,” she bluntly answered.
Ben stared at her, wide eyed and in disbelief. “You mean… No way! I should
have known. It was so predictable,” he said as if he didn’t know about her
first romp with Darren.
“Now that Faith let out her secret, your turn, Benny. What did you tell her
that you didn’t tell me?” Morgan asked.
“That you and I were sorta seeing each other,” Ben told her.
“Oh, that’s not a really big secret. I think by the time I leave this
godforsaken place, everybody will know,” she said.
“Well, I guess we’ll see how long this secret can go on without someone
finding out,” he replied.
“Guys, I think Spaz knows. She was peeking in on you two earlier,” Faith
interrupted.
“Great,” Morgan barely expressed. “Why don’t we just let them all in and
tell them?”
“I’ll get the door,” Faith said as she started walking towards it. She
opened the door and waved for everyone to come in.
“So, is she finally gonna spill the beans?” Spaz asked when she pulled Faith
aside.
“Gee, I wonder,” Faith replied sarcastically.
“Oh, I knew it! I so totally knew it!” Spaz bubbled as she skipped into the
room. Sure enough, she got what she wanted. Morgan ended up explaining that she
and Ben were together, but nothing big has really happened between, at least
anything as big as what happened between Faith and Darren.
“Hey, you know what I really want to know?” Angi asked. Faith’s ears
perked up. This was the first time she had heard Angi speak to any of them. “I
wanna know how the accident happened. How did you get hurt by a wire?”
“Well, you see, I did get hurt by the wire. This bruise on my face is from the
wire. What broke my arm was the damn clamp on the wire that hit me square in the
arm and snapped it in half,” Morgan explained. “The floor knocked me
unconscious.”
“Ooh! That must of hurt!” Karl sympathized. “Ouch!”
“When are you getting out of here?” Angi asked.
“Tonight, hopefully. And hopefully you guys will wait for me because if I even
try to get home, I know I won’t find anyone there to take care of me. My
parents are in Spain on vacation for the summer because I’m gone, and they
don’t expect me home until I have to pack for college,” Morgan said.
“Of course we’ll wait for you. We can’t just leave you all by yourself in
a strange town without anyone to look after you,” Ben replied as he kissed her
forehead.
“Okay, now that we’ve settled everything, we need to head back to the hotel
and figure out a new plan. We’re down to two roadies, and we need help getting
things on the bus,” Leonie said.
“You’ve always got us,” Lee suggested. “We can help Faith and Spaz for
the time being until Morgan is strong enough to help them again.”
“I’ll stick around here for a while,” Ben said.
“That’s obvious,” Darren said under his breath. Faith began to giggle. She
led him out of the room before they both exploded into laughter.
“So, how’s your foot?” Faith asked once they were out of the others’
earshot.
“Better, I guess. It still hurts like all hell, but with a bunch of
painkillers, I’ll be fine. I just need to keep those pills from you,” he
replied.
“Hey! I’m not suicidal anymore!” she protested.
“Yeah, but you’re still a drunk.”
Faith stuck out her tongue. Darren laughed and grabbed her by the waist to pull
her in for a kiss.
