Chapter
14: Realizing Consequences
“I don’t wanna go to the doctor!” Faith loudly protested as she thrashed
around in her bed, trying to stay beneath the covers for as long as she possibly
could while Darren tried to pull them off.
“You have to go. You don’t want anyone else catching what you have, do you?
Then we’ll have to cancel the tour if everybody gets sick because of you,”
he tried to reason as he managed to pull the sheet away from her grasp.
“Grr! Fine, I’ll go, but I won’t like it,” she replied, getting out of
bed and walking into the bathroom of her suite at the Beverly Hills Hotel. After
dressing, Faith and Darren headed down the street to a small clinic.
Faith sat on the exam table patiently waiting for the doctor to walk in any
second as Darren stayed in the waiting room. A woman in her mid thirties, maybe
early forties walked into the room in a white lab coat and stethoscope around
her neck.
“Faith Somers, I presume,” she said in her Texan accent.
“That’s me. Who are you?” Faith replied.
“Dr. Helen Marcello,” the doctor answered. “So, why are you here today?”
“Well, my friend decided that I was a health hazard to everyone on our bus, so
he made me come here to make sure that I wasn’t sick,” Faith explained.
“Health hazard? That’s an odd choice of words.”
“Well, I’m an odd person, so I guess that makes it okay.”
Dr. Marcello laughed as she pulled her stethoscope off her neck and pressed it
against Faith’s back. “Take a few deep breaths for me,” she advised. Faith
did as she was told. “Well, your lungs sound just fine.”
“See, I’m not sick!”
“When was your last period?”
“Um…” Faith pulled out her palm pilot and checked the date. “Two months
ago,” her voice trailed off.
The doctor nodded. “When was the last time you had sex?”
“Two days ago.”
“How many times have you had sex in the last month?”
“Three times.”
“Have you been experiencing any feelings of fatigue? Nausea? Increase in
appetite?”
“Well, I was feeling a little tired a few days ago, but I think it was because
I’ve been working too hard.”
“Do me a favor,” Dr. Marcello said as she opened one of the drawers in her
desk and pulled out a pregnancy test. “Take this right now. If the results
come back positive, I want to do an ultrasound. If they come back negative, you
can leave.”
Faith was quietly ushered into the bathroom and quickly took the test. She
couldn’t stand to see if it changed colors by herself, so she waited until she
was back in the exam room with the doctor.
“Well? Positive or negative?” Dr. Marcello asked.
“I don’t know. I was afraid to look,” Faith nervously replied. She handed
the test over to the doctor. Marcello looked at it, her eyebrows rising
slightly. “Well, what is it?” Faith anxiously asked.
“It’s positive,” Dr. Marcello answered.
“What? No!” Faith cried. “I can’t be pregnant!”
“That’s why I need to do an ultrasound. Come with me.”
Dr. Marcello took Faith into a darkened room and had her lay on a table as she
did the exam with the ultrasound machine. Her eyes stared at the screen until
she was able to make out a tiny shape. “Faith, you are pregnant,” she
bluntly said as she pointed to the tiny dot on the screen.
“No! No! Nooo!” Faith cried as she saw the little object. “This can’t be
happening to me! I’m only eighteen!”
“Faith, I know what you’re going through. I’ve seen plenty of young
pregnant girls. We have counselors here to help you if you want,” Dr. Marcello
suggested.
“No, I don’t need anyone’s help. I can handle this on my own,” Faith
grumbled.

Faith was unusually quiet that night at dinner. Morgan could see that something
weighed heavily on her shoulders. She tapped her shoulder and took her to the
bathroom where they could talk more privately.
“Faith, what’s wrong? What happened at the doctor’s office today?” she
asked.
“Nothing,” Faith replied, distracted.
“That’s not true, what happened?” Morgan tried again.
“Nothing, Morgan. Stop asking!” Faith defensively retorted as she walked out
of the bathroom and back towards the restaurant. On her way there, she heard
Spaz in the lobby talking on one of the pay phones to someone Faith didn’t
know.
“She’s acting like a total bitch! She won’t leave me alone! She even
caught Karl and me kissing in my bunk! Total invasion of privacy… I think
she’s only trying to get back at me for catching her and Darren making out in
the restaurant on the first tour date and the time that I stuck a little too
much coke in her syringe when we were all shooting up…” Spaz was saying as
she took a puff of her cigarette.
That’s all Faith needed to hear to be pushed over the edge. “You fucking
bitch!” she screamed at the top of her lungs. Everyone in the lobby turned and
stared at her including Spaz.
“I’ll call you back, Quinn,” she hung up without saying goodbye.
“How dare you tell people what’s been going on in my life?” Faith yelled
as Spaz came closer, the cigarette falling to the floor and getting crushed by
her high-heeled shoes.
“Oh, come on, I was only talking to Quinn,” Spaz replied with a smirk. Quinn
was her best fried and Faith’s worst enemy.
“Tell me something, did you accidentally put too much coke in my syringe that
night or were you trying to kill me?” Faith hissed.
“That was a pure accident, Faith. I wasn’t trying to kill you! Same thing
with Becky!” Spaz shouted, but soon caught herself.
Faith’s eyes widened with disbelief when she heard that little piece of
information. “You were the one who gave Becky that needle? You killed my best
friend! You goddamned fucking son of a bitch!” Faith screamed as she lunged
for Spaz’s throat.
Darren and the other’s head the commotion coming from the lobby and were soon
on their feet running to see what was going on. By the time they arrived, a
crowd had already gathered around the two fighters. Darren quickly made his way
through the tightly packed spectators to see that Faith and Spaz were at it
again.
“How dare you try to kill me with my own drugs! How dare you put too much coke
in my syringe! I knew I never should have become friends with you after that
fight! I knew I should have just stopped talking to you! You’re nothing but
trouble! I should have seen it coming! All you wanted was my position as leader
of the pack! Well, you know what! You’re never going to get it! You hear me,
bitch!” Faith shouted as she punched Spaz square in the jaw. “I fucking
trusted you with my life! How could you betray me!”
Spaz was soaking in her own blood by the time Faith decided to back off. She
stood up, panting and breathing hard. She looked up to find that the room was
full of people staring at her in shock. Out of the corner of her eye, she could
see Darren standing beside Morgan and Ben, his mouth gaping open. Faith knew
that he had heard what she was saying. Everyone had heard. She looked down at
her bloody knuckles then at the crowd and Darren as he stared at her with pure
hatred in his eyes.
He walked up to her and said, “You lied to me.”
“I lied to keep you safe. I gave you a chance to back out, but you wouldn’t.
I told you I was only going to cause you trouble, and I did. Can you finally see
why I didn’t want to get too close? I knew I was only gonna end up breaking
you heart. Well, guess what, to spare you any tears, I’ll give you a chance to
break up with me right now,” Faith said. Darren stood there and stared at her.
His head told him to do it, but his heart ordered him not to. He stayed silent
as she uneasily shifted under his gaze. “Come on, Darren. Take it or leave
it.” He stayed silent for what seemed like hours as the people around them
continued to watch. They were waiting for his answer also, but it wasn’t
coming.
Faith, finally too fed up to wait any longer, said, “Okay, Darren. I didn’t
want it to come to this, but I guess it had to. It’s over between us. I’m
leaving. Goodbye.” Faith pushed her way out of the circle of people around her
and disappeared outside in the darkness. Darren stood in the middle of the
circle, his eyes unable to fall away from the lobby doors that Faith escaped
from.
Morgan walked over to him and put her good arm around his shoulders to lead him
away as Karl walked over to Spaz’s limp body and carried her back to her room.
