Chapter 2

A couple months flew by and a lot happened. First, I moved back home. My dad and I had a nice sized house right by the bay where we were near the ocean. We had to go out and buy every pair of baggy wide legs jeans we could find so I could get into them easily. My school sent me my books and my dad took a leave of absence from his lay firm to help me learn. My dad was amazing because he went to college and got his masters while raising me all alone. So, he was very smart. I was starting to walk. Well, with the help if a cane. Various parts of my legs would be sore at different times, and I had to go back to the hospital for therapy. The doc said I was making great progress and by next year, I might be playing soccer.

It killed me. We got word about me meeting Savage Garden and they had a heck of a time finding out a time they could make it, and after a month, they finally did. I was gonna meet them in 5 weeks. I was getting a little excited. Mimi bought me their CD, all access video, and a lot of posters. Since I was home a lot, I listened to their CD. I also turned 16. I didn't have a big party like I planned, basically because I was bummed I couldn't drive. So, I told my dad, "No party." Boy, was I wrong. My dad, Mimi and the whole soccer team threw me a surprise party. I swear there were about 200 people there. Mimi made the whole school come and bring a friend. It was a blast.

A week later, I started to walk on my own again. During therapy, she requested that I started to dance. I used to take ballet classes when I was little, just like all the other girls, but I got kicked out because I punched a little show-off in the face. But I was a natural dancer. She threw in "I Want You" and she taught me the dance. I got it down pat and even though I had to wear ankle braces, it was fun. I was still home from school and the day grew closer from when I was gonna meet Savage Garden. I guess I was a little nervous. I made myself memorize their names, so I'd save myself the humility of forgetting them.

"Darren, Daniel, Ben, Lee, and Ben," I said, out loud. I looked at the picture.

"Shoot, its Karl, Karl, Karl," I said, repeating over and over.

"Hey Dee, I just got off the phone with Ben and the guys are looking forward to meeting you," my dad said, running his hand through his short, messy-spiked black hair.

"Cool, but they don't know anything...."

".....about 'make a wish'. Yep, I got it handled. They think they are meeting you cause I know Ben. It's covered," my dad said, kissing my head.

"Thanks dad," I said, as he left my room. The day came closer and I actually grew nervous. On the morning of the big day, I woke up to my dad fixing me pancakes and bacon. I rolled out of bed and washed my short black hair. Since it was layered, I added a clip to make it look cute. I put on my baggy cargo pants and a cute t-shirt that said GAP on it. I wanted to look comfortable and nice. I did my makeup and put a little power on and a little light purple on my eyelids. Since my eyelashes already have a nice long curl, I skipped the mascara. Then I added my favorite: glitter. I glittered my eyes and cheeks since everyone said I looked the best with glitter. Then I added one last thing, my ankle braces and my knee braces. I carefully got down the steps and my dad whistled when I came in.

"Fab, just fab!" my dad said, pretending to be a model agent. We ate and got into my dad's car. We were gonna meet them at the pier. I picked it myself since it was so beautiful on the beach by the watch tower. We drove up and I saw 5 backs that were sitting on a blanket.

"Ready kiddo?" my dad asked me.

"Yep," I said, smiling. I put on a tad of lip-gloss and we walked toward them. They turned around and all stood up.

"Joe!" Ben said with his thick Aussie accent.

"Ben!" my dad said. They shook hands and patted each other on the back. "This is my daughter, Delia."

"Hey, what's up?" I said. Ben shook my hand.

"Hey," he added. He flashed his killer smile.

"Hey Delia," Karl said, as he shook my hand.

"Yo, wazzup?" Lee said, as he shook my hand.

"Hey there Delia," Daniel said, as he did the same.

"Hi," Darren said, in the back. He stepped forward and our eyes met. I must have looked like a dork because my dad nudged me to shake his hand. We touched and I felt a chill go up my spine.

"Hi," I said back. We just stood there, shaking hands, when Karl said. "Let's sit." We all took our places on the blanket and it ended up that I was sitting next to my dad and Darren. I kept looking over at him, and he'd smile. God, I loved his smile. We all sat around and talked about everything from Ben and my dad in high school, to their tour they finished. I loved to watch each of them. They were all very different from each other. They'd ask me all the questions, and they learned everything from my shoe size to my coach's name.

"When is your next game?" Daniel asked.

"Umm...," I said nervously, " the season is over."

 "This early?" Karl asked.

"Yeah, they start early," my dad said, helping me out. We all talked longer and Karl challenged my dad to a race along the beach. My dad being as in the shape he was in, agreed. Ben joined in. Darren stood up and helped me.

 "Wanna run?" Darren asked.

 "Nah," I said.

"Why not? I bet your fast," Darren said.

"I don't wanna," I said. My dad, Ben, Karl, and now Daniel lined up.

"READY?! SET?! Goooorilla!!" Lee said, tricking all them.

"Lee!" they all said. Lee laughed at his own joke.

"GOO!!!!!" he screamed. They were off. Lee tried to run and catch up to see who won, but he was having bad luck. Darren and I stood off to the side. My dad and I raced all the time and I wanted so bad to beat them all.

"How come you didn't join them?" I asked Darren, who was alone with me by the pier.

"I dunno, I'm not that fast after all," he said. He looked so cute. He shaved off his goatee I heard he had, and he looked a lot younger. Our eyes met.

"Wanna go for a walk?" Darren asked.

"I'd love too," I said. We took off. We continued to talk.

"So, what’s famous life like?" I asked.

"Its.... tiring," he answered.  I laughed.

"I bet. But you guys are great."

"Thanks," he said, smiling. I wanted to melt. We continued to walk when I tripped over a rock and fell.

"Ow!" I cringed. Regularly, it wouldn't hurt, but my knees and ankles were still weak.

"Are you ok?" Darren said, rushing to my side. I fought back the tears and said.

"Yeah, my knees are just a little...um...weak," I said. I tried to stand up, but I couldn't.

"Here," Darren said as he picked me up.

"Ah! Darren! Put me down!!" I said laughing.

"Nuh huh! You had your chance!" he said, also laughing. He started to run and swirl me around. He ran to the shoreline and acted like he was gonna throw me in the water.

 "Don't you dare!!" I said.

"Watch me!!" he said, laughing. We fooled around and he set me down. I grabbed his shoulder to catch my balance. The guys ran back to us.

"Ya beat them, Dad?" I asked.

"Yep, this old man still got his stuff!" my dad said. Karl, Lee and Ben fell on the ground, trying to catch their breath.

"Hey, where's DANIEL?!" I asked. Then, I saw him, dragging behind. He fell to the ground and huffed and puffed. I started to crack up.

"Look's like some Savage Gardeners need to get in shape!" I said. "Not to mention any names.... DANIEL!" I said. They all cracked up and Daniel said-

"Well....I....never.....have.....time ....to ......run," he said, trying to catch his breath.

"Su-ure," I teased. "Man, my leg itches." I said as I pulled up my pant leg and itched a mosquito bite. Darren saw my ankle brace.

 "What's that?"

 "What's what?" I asked.

"Is that an ankle brace you have on? What did you do?" he asked, worried.

 "Oh, that’s nothing, don't worry," I said.

"Hey, let's all go out for dinner, my treat," Ben said. We all agreed. We walked to the parking lot and realized that their tour bus went to get gas and the guys didn’t have rental cars.

"Hmm... Well, we could squeeze all ya in my car," my dad said. My dad had a black jeep. We all climbed in. Ben and my dad took the driver's and passenger's seat, Daniel, Lee, and Karl squished in the back and Darren and I got to sit in the far back where there weren’t any seats. We drove to the restaurant and asked for a table in the back. We got into a separate room and sat down at the table. I ended up sitting across from Darren and next to Daniel. We ordered and my dad and Ben caught up on their high school memories. Karl and Lee tried to see who could hold their nose the longest and Daniel timed them.

"I swear, I don't know them!" Darren told me as Lee shouted, "Hey! Quit pushing it off my nose!" I started to laugh. Darren just looked at me.

 "What?" I asked. He blushed.

"Nothing," he said, quietly. We all got our meals and ate. We finished and walked outside.

"Hun, Ben and I are gonna go to see and old pal who lives around here, so one of the guys are gonna take you home, ok? Be back by midnight," my dad said.

"Kay Dad, have fun," I said as he got into the jeep with Ben. The rest of us walked to the pier where the boys found their rental cars dropped off for them.

"Sheesh, good timing. They're about, oh, 5 hours late!" Daniel said, pretending to look at his watch. Each of the guys had a car.

"Well guys, I dunno about you, but I'm tired. I'm jettin," Lee said, as he got into his car.

 "See ya," we all said.

 "Shit," Daniel said.

 "What?" Karl said.

"I just realized, hehe, there's a car here for me," Daniel said. Darren sighed, rolling his eyes.

"I, um, kinda didn't pass the writing part of the driving test and haven't had time to make it up," Daniel said, explaining it to me.

"Well, you’re stuck Jonesy, cause I'm with Lee. I'm hittin' the sack," Karl said as he hugged me bye. "Bye Dee, we'll see ya tomorrow. Bye guys," he said as he got in his car.

"Hey, D! Buddy ole pal, can I possibly chill with you guys tonight?" Daniel asked, flashing a smile.

 "Sure," Darren said.

"So, are you guys tired too?" I asked.

 "Nope," they both said.

"Ok, what are we gonna do?" Darren asked.

"Hmm...we could go clubbing," I suggested.

"Ok," they agreed. We walked toward the car, just leaving Daniel’s there.

"Shotgun," I yelled, calling the front seat.

"Damn," Daniel said. I hopped in. Darren started the car.

"Hey Dee, aren't you 16?" Daniel asked.

 "Yeah, why?"

"Can't you drive yet?" he asked.

"Um...I haven't had time to take the test," I lied.

"Oh, I see. C'mon, D, my grandma can drive faster than you!" Daniel said.

 "Hey Jonsey?" Darren said.

 "What?"

 "Shut up."
