Chapter 4
~~The next morning~~~
"Auuugggghhhh,"
I groaned, as I rolled over. My knee was killing me and the pain woke me up. I
sat up and looked at my knee. It was swelled up.
"Great. Perfect
timing," I mumbled as I dragged myself out of bed.
"Dad!" I
shouted. He came in my room.
"What Hun?"
"My knee hurts and
its swelled up," I said. Whenever that happened, I was supposed to call the
doctor. My dad picked up the phone and called.
"Ok, the doctor is
going to call back," my dad said. He kissed my head and went downstairs.
"Oh dad?" I
called out.
"What?"
"What time are the
guys getting here?"
"Noon," my
dad called back. They were gonna spend the day with us. I checked my watch. It
read 10:30. I limped into the shower and got ready. I put on my huge knee brace
and since it was bigger than the regular Ace bandages, my jeans wouldn't fit
over it. I tried every pair of pants I had. I couldn't let Darren and the others
see my knee. Finally, I found of huge Jenco's with a purple swirl down each leg.
It was noon and the guys showed up in Ben's rental jeep and Karl's rental car.
"Hey guys,"
my dad greeted.
"Hey," Karl,
Darren, Lee and Ben said. Daniel lugged behind them, carrying a box of tissues.
"Aaa...aaaaaaaccchhhOOOO!"
Daniel sneezed. He blew his nose.
"Daniel woke up
with a cold, but insisted on coming over," Lee said. I heard them and
finished getting ready. My knee was hurting even more and I trudged down the
steps, trying to not make notice of it.
"Hey Dee!"
they all said.
"Hi," I said.
"Ello Dee,"
DANIEL said, with a stuffed nose.
"Hey, those are
sweet pants," Lee said.
"Thanks," I
said. We all went into the living room and my dad got them food and drinks.
Daniel was sneezing away. He actually looked like a regular person cause he had
on sweat pants and a sweatshirt. He couldn't wear sunglasses cause they'd fly
off every time he sneezed. We all sat around and talked and ate. I sat by Darren
on the couch and he kept looking over at me and smiling. The phone rang and my
dad flew in the kitchen to answer it.
"Hello?.......
Yes......ok.....are you sure that’s necessary?.....ok Doctor......," my
dad said as he talked to him. He motioned me to come in. I slowly got up and
limped into the kitchen. Darren shot his eyes over to Karl who was sitting on
the floor.
"What's going
on?" Darren asked.
"I have no
clue," Karl said.
"I heard him say
'doctor'. Is Dee ok?" he asked, keeping his voice low.
"Mon't worry D,
nocor might ke his dirst mame," Daniel said, trying to cheer up his friend.
"What?!" Lee
asked.
"Translation,
Don't worry, Doctor might be his first name," Karl said, since they
couldn't understand Daniel.
"Hanks,"
Daniel said, trying to say 'thanks'.
"Yeah, I'm sure
its Doctor, Daniel," Ben said, rolling his eyes. Daniel shrugged. My dad
came back in.
"Umm guys...can
you just chill here for awhile? Something came up. You guys can stay here so you
don't have to go to the hotel," my dad said.
"Oh, is everything
ok?" Lee asked.
"Yeah, don't worry
about it. We'll be right back," my dad said. He grabbed the keys and ran to
the car where I was already in. I dashed out the door because I didn't want to
lie to Darren. We drove to the doctor so I could get checked. I was really upset
and my dad noticed.
"Don't worry Dee,
everything will be ok. He'll probably just give you some pain killers," my
dad said. I nodded and looked out the window.
~~~~~
"I wonder what's
going on," Ben said.
"I'm sure it's
nothing. He's a lawyer, he probably had to do something," Karl said,
turning on the TV to see a college football game on, "GO KENTUCKY!"
"Then why would he
take Dee?" Lee said.
"Muys, mop it, I'm
kure eberythind id ok," Daniel said, through sniffles. The guys looked at
Karl. He sighed.
"Guys, stop it,
I'm sure everything is ok," Karl said, translating for Daniel.
"Manks,"
Daniel said. Darren wasn't interested in the game like everyone else. He got up
and walked around looking at pictures. He saw Dee's school picture.
"Wow, she looks
like she's 21," Darren thought. He looked at her soccer picture. There was
a huge across her face. His heart began to beat faster and faster. He picked it
up and stared at it. He focused on her smile. It was different. It was big,
bright and her eyes lit up. He knew her smile didn't look like that now. He
looked at other pictures and saw the same smile that was missing. He loved her
school picture. He picked it up and looked at it. He smiled again. She looked so
happy and carefree, which was nothing like how she looked now. He was just
standing there, holding the picture.
"Mice, huh?"
Daniel said. Darren could also understand him.
"Yeah, it is
nice," he said, placing it down.
"D, in the mast
fen years I've dnown you, I've mever seen you like miss," he said, meaning
to say, 'In the past ten years I've known you, I've never seen you like this.'
"I know. I've
never felt like this. I don't get it. Am I in love?" Darren asked, looking
at Daniel.
He blew his nose and
said, "I donno. What waz tha fist king you bought bout when you woke
up?" Daniel asked.
"What?"
Darren said.
"What was the
first thing you thought about when you woke up?" Karl called out from the
couch, not taking his eyes away from the TV and not paying attention to their
conversation.
"Kanks,"
Daniel said.
"Oh, umm...,"
Darren said as he turned bright red, "Delia."
"I bew it,"
Daniel said, meaning 'knew'.
"What do I do
Jonsey?"
"Follow kour
heart," he said, meaning 'your'.
"Ok, thanks Jonsey.
Ya know, you need to go to the doctor," Darren said.
"No I don.....Aaa....aaa......ACHHHHHOOOO!"
Daniel sneezed, nearly falling on the floor.
"C'mon Jonsey.
You're never sick and I'm taking you to the doctor," Darren said. They
walked into the kitchen and found a phone book. They found a local doctor and
got the address.
"I think I can
find it," Darren said. He got the keys to Karl's car and Daniel followed
him. They got in the car and drove away.
~~~~~~~
"Hello
Delia," the doctor said, as he entered the room.
"Hey," I
mumbled.
The doctor checked out
my knee and said, "Well, I don't think she needs to go to the hospital.
I'll give you some medicine and after a week, we'll see if the swelling goes
down. If it doesn't, we'll check you into the hospital," the doctor said,
"for now, I want you to not put pressure on it as much as possible."
"Ok, thank you
doctor," my dad said.
"I forgot your
medical folder, excuse me for one sec," he said, as he left the room.
~~~~
"Hi, how may we
help you?" the nurse said to Daniel.
"He needs to see
the doctor for his cold," Darren said for him. The nurse handed him a form
to sign out. Delia's doctor came out and started looking for her folder. Darren
and Daniel sat down and Daniel filled out the form while Darren read a magazine.
Daniel got up and walked to the counter. He waited for the nurse to see him.
He over heard the
doctor say, "Where's Delia DeKator's folder?"
The nurse got it for
him and looked at Daniel. Daniel handed her the clipboard while looking at
Delia's folder.
"Ohmigod," he
thought. He walked back to his seat and waited to see her walk out. He saw Delia
and her dad walk out through the back door. His mouth dropped.
"Why the hell are
they here? If it wasn't a big deal, they would of told us. She didn't seem
sick," he thought. He was worried. He knew something wasn't right. He
decided not to tell Darren. He saw the doctor hand the nurse her folder and she
set it on the counter. She got up to do something and just left the folder
there. Daniel looked over at Darren who was next to him and saw that Darren was
very into reading and couldn't see him. Daniel quietly stood up and walked to
the desk. He pretended to look a their business card when he snatched the
folder. He ducked behind a corner and opened it. He started to look through the
pages. He came across the information about her cancer and her treatment.
"Ohmigod,"
Daniel thought. He read everything from how she got it to how she is now. He was
speechless. He didn't know what to do. He counted Delia as one of his closest
friends. Even though he knew her for a day, he told her everything when they
talked at the beach. To know that she was going though this brought tears to his
eyes. He didn't let them overflow. He began to put the pieces of the puzzle
together: her ankle and knee braces, how she didn't want to run, how she
couldn't drive, how she wore huge pants and how they ran out of the house this
morning. "Ohmigod. Well, if she didn't tell us, she doesn't want us to
know," he thought. He decided not to tell anyone. Especially Darren. He
snuck the folder back and sat down. His name was shortly called and he got a
prescription for his medicine. On the way home, Daniel didn't say a word.
"Ya ok Jonsey?"
Darren asked.
"Jeah," he
mumbled, still stuffed up.
"Sure?"
"Meah."
