Chapter 6

I was sound asleep when the phone rang the next morning at 11:00. My dad answered it.

 "Hello?"

 "Hey Joe, it's Darren," Darren said on the other line.

 "Hey man," my dad said, "Dee's still asleep."

 "Oh, well, actually I called to ask you something," Darren said.

 "Oh, ok," my dad replied.

 "Well, the past 2 days I spent with your daughter and I've never been so happy in my life. I know she's 10 years younger than me and that's why I called. Do you mind if I ask her out on a date tonight?" Darren asked. My dad smiled.

 "Darren, that’s very nice to call and ask. I don't mind one bit if you ask her out. If she was gonna date an older guy, I would want it to be you," my dad said.

 "Thanks Joe. See ya later today," Darren said.

 "Ok, see ya," my dad said, as they hung up.

~~~~~
 "WHOO-HOO!!" Darren screamed, as he hung up the phone.
 "He said yes?" Karl asked.
 "YEP!" Darren screamed, all smiles.
 "So, air you konna make her?" Daniel asked, still a little sick.
 "So, where you gonna take her?" Karl said, for Daniel.
 "I dunno yet. Probably out to eat at a fancy restaurant and then maybe go dancing," Darren said. Daniel’s head shot up.
 "MO!" Daniel said.
 "He said, 'NO'," Karl said.
 "No what?" Darren asked.
 "You smant tame her fancing," Daniel said.
 "You can't take her dancing," Karl said.
 "Why not?" Darren asked, confused.
 "Cuzz....um....you troo smeed to ne alone," Daniel said.
 "You two need to be alone," Karl replied.
 "Yeah, your right Daniel. I'll take her to the beach," Darren said, so happy that he didn't bother to ask him about being alone and why not to take her dancing.
 "Mats cetter," Daniel said.
 "That's better," Karl said.
 I rolled over and dragged myself out of bed. I got in the shower and washed my hair and made it look "messy." I got ready and put on a pair of cargo pants and a shirt that said "Girl's Hockey" from the Delia*s catalog. The doorbell rang and I heard the guys come in and say they wanted to go shopping. My dad agreed. I heard Daniel and Darren come up the stairs. I opened my bathroom door and saw them.
 "Hey guys," I greeted.
 "Yo," Daniel said.
 "Hey," Darren said. I smiled at them and Darren shot a look at Daniel that said, "Get the hell outta here." Daniel got the message. He smiled and left the room.
 "Nice room," Darren said, looking at my creative room that had Christmas lights on the ceiling, slinkys hanging off the walls, old soccer shoes and other items.
 "Thanks," I said.
 "Hey, um...I was wondering, are you doing anything tonight?" he asked, looking at his feet.
 "Nope," I said.
 "Well, I was wondering.... um.... do you wanna do something? Ya know, just you and me....," Darren said, turning red.
 "Ya mean, a date?" I asked.
 "Yeah."
 "I'd love too," I said. He beamed and we walked downstairs.
 "Hey guys, we're going to the mall, wanna come?" Karl asked.
 "Sure," I replied. We drove in two cars, me, Darren and Daniel in one, and the others in the Jeep. Daniel, Darren, and I drove separately because we were gonna go to a different mall. We got there and shopped the whole day. I loved hanging with Daniel and Darren. The dropped me back off at my house and Darren walked me up to the porch.
 "I'll pick you up at 7," he said, sweetly.
 "I can't wait," I said. We said bye and I walked in the house. I looked at my watch and I had only 2 hours. I watched TV for a little bit and when I only had an hour left, I decided to get ready. I pulled open my closet and decided on something not to dressy, but not to casual. He was going to take me to a nice restaurant, so I pulled out my one and only skirt. I had to wear it to a soccer banquet last year. It was long and black. It had a long slit up the side. Kind of like the one Monica wears in the "Boy is Mine" video. I put on a semi-tight, cute bright blue shirt that had short sleeves. It brought out my eyes. I put 3rd Eye Blind in my CD player and blasted "Semi-Charmed Life" as I got ready.
 I put a barrette in my hair and ran my fingers through it to give it body. I snapped the sparkly clip in my jet-black hair and put on light purple eye shadow. I put on clear mascara and covered my face in glitter. I grabbed my lip balm and put some on to make my lips look "glossy." I was brushing my teeth when the doorbell rang. My dad let Darren in and I grabbed my shoes, which were a cute pair of Doc's and threw them on. I grabbed 10 bucks for an emergency, my lip balm and stuffed them in my shoe since I hated lugging around a purse. I shut the door and walked down stairs and appeared in the living room. I looked at Darren and wanted to melt. He was wearing Cargo khaki pants that were lightly stagged, and an awesome sweater from the Gap. He looked fantastic. He looked at me and his eyes lit up.
 "Hi," he said.
 "Yo," I replied.
 "Hun, you look great!" my dad said.
 "Thanks," I said. Darren took my hand and we walked out the door. He opened the car door for me and I slipped in the passengers seat. Darren got in, started the car and we drove off.
 "Wow, you look great tonight," Darren said.
 "Oh, and I don't look good any other day? I see what you're getting at," I said, playing around. He laughed.
 "Well, you're always beautiful, but tonight, you look extra special," he said, sweetly.
 "Thanks. You don't look half bad yourself," I said.
 "Thanks," he replied. We drove to the restaurant and he parked the car. We got out and he held my hand.
 "Hayes," he said to the host.
 "Right this way," he said, leading us to our table.
 "Hmmm....Delia Hayes," I thought. I was shocked that came across my mind and I quickly erased it. It was a nice restaurant. Not too formal, but not too casual. The exact way each of us was dressed.  We sat down and looked at the menu.
 "This is sooooo nice," I said to him.
 "I know. Especially since I'm here with you," he said, smiling.
 "You just have to say those little things which make me melt, don't cha?" I asked.
 "Yep," he replied. I smiled and went back to deciding what I wanted to eat. I was starving since I didn't have lunch and my medication makes me hungry.
 "What are you getting?" I asked him.
 "I dunno, I think I might get the pasta, but there's no way I can eat all of it," he said.
 "Great, get it and I'll split it with you," I said.
 "You sure?" he asked.
 "Yeah, I wanted pasta, but I can't eat the whole thing myself too," I said. He agreed and we put our menu's down and waited to order. The waitress came and took our orders. She took our menus and walked away. Darren looked me straight in the eyes. He put his hand on top of mine.
 "I gotta tell you something," he said. I felt the butterflies in my stomach turn into wild birds trying to get free. "Ever since I shook your hand, I couldn't get you off my mind. I spent the past 3 days getting to know you. I feel like you're a part of me. I love everything about you. The way you talk, the way you laugh, your smile, your eyes, your hair, the way you tell jokes, the way you bite your lower lip when you're nervous. Like you're doing right now. Everything Delia," he said. I was speechless.
 "Darren.... no one ever said anything like that to me. I feel the same way. I can tell you anything. I love everything about you too," I said. I felt tears come to my eyes. I tried to fight them.
 "I never, in my life, felt like this. I think I'm falling in love with you," he said, looking deep into my eyes, "I want you to become my girlfriend. I know this is our first date, but I've never felt like this, and I dunno if its love, but I like it. So...Delia, will you be my girlfriend?" he asked.
 "Yes," I whispered, "but when will we see each other?"
 "Well, I have so many frequent flyer miles, I can fly here to Boston every other weekend, and we can call, write, and email. With the way I feel right now, I'm not gonna let a couple of countries bring us apart," he said.
 "Yes, I will," I said. He smiled and so did I. I've never been so happy in my life. Our food came and we ate. We finished and he paid the bill. We left the restaurant and we got back in the car. We decided to drive to the pier. We got there and we sat on the sand. Darren looked in my eyes.
 "I got an idea," he said. He got in the car and turned on the lights and stereo. He left the door open so we could hear it. The song by 98 degrees, "Because of You," was on and he took my hand. "May I have this dance?" he asked. I nodded and we wrapped our arms around each other. I placed my head on his chest and he held me. It felt so good to be in his arms. We were silent and our ears caught the lyrics, "...you're my sunshine after the rain, you're the cure against my fear and my pain, cause I'm loosing my mind when your not around, it's all because of you......." The song ended and we pulled apart.
 "Thanks," I whispered. Our eyes met and we leaned our heads toward each other. His lips brushed softly against mine. I kissed him back and we separated. We smiled at each other. He ran his fingers though my short hair. I slightly laughed.
 "My hair's shorter than yours," I said. He smiled. Then, at perfect timing, my knee's started to hurt. Really bad. I stumbled and grabbed Darren's shoulder.
 "Whoa, you ok?" he asked.
 "Yeah, my leg must have fallen asleep," I lied. I hated lying to him.
 "Oh, I hate when that happens," he said, smiling. I returned a fake smile even though I was in pain.
 "I think I better get home," I said.
 "Ok," he agreed. He helped me in the car and I had to fight back tears from the pain. "Why didn't you wear your brace???" I screamed at myself. We drove up to my house.
 "Thanks for everything Darren," I said. He walked me to the door.
 "My pleasure," he said, flashing his cute smile. We kissed lightly and I walked in the door. My dad approached me with his hand behind his back.
 "Hey honey, how was it?" he asked.
 "Great," I replied.
 "Did you forget something?" he asked.
 "Umm...no?" I said. He held up my knee brace. I sighed.
 "You haven't told him, have you?" my dad asked.
 "No," I said, shortly.
 "Dee...you gotta tell him," my dad said.
 "Why?! I'm getting better!" I said.
 "Honey....you...," he sighed. I knew what he wanted to say. He wanted to say, "Honey, you aren't getting better. He deserves to know."
 "I know, I just can't get the guts to tell him," I said, "he asked me out tonight."
 "I knew he was going too," my dad said, smiling.
 "How?" I asked.
 "He called this morning and asked for my permission," my dad said.
 "He did?" I asked, smiling.
 "Yep."
 "That's so sweet," I said, smiling.
 "He likes you a lot," my dad said. I nodded and kissed him on the cheek. I headed upstairs. I flopped on my bed and sighed.
 "How can my life be so good and so bad at the same time?" I asked myself.
