Chapter 8

Darren ran in the building and flew up to Daniel and Joe.

 "Is she ok?? What happened? Where is she?" Darren asked.

 "She's still in there," Daniel said, as he got up and walked around.

 "Joe, tell me, what's going on?" Darren asked.

 "Here, come walk with me," Joe said, grabbing Darren's arm and leaving Lee, Karl, and Ben in wonder. They walked down the hall in silence. Then Joe spoke up.

 "Darren....I know she didn't want me being the one to tell you, but....," Joe said, as a tear ran down his cheek, "Delia has leg cancer." Darren gasped.

 "What?!" he said.

 "She was diagnosed with it a couple months ago. She didn't want to tell anyone about it cause she wanted to fight it first. She got a chance to meet you guys by the "Make a Wish" foundation. We just used the excuse of me knowing Ben to fool you all," Joe said, quietly. Darren was silent.

 "Why couldn't she tell me?" he whispered.

 "She was afraid. Afraid that you, and everyone else would pity her. She had to know that you loved her for her. And not because of pity," Joe said.

 "Did any of the other guys know about this?" Darren asked.

 "Daniel. That's it. He told me when I got here. When you took him to the doctor, it was the same day we were there. Dee woke up with her knee swollen and that's why we ran out the door like we did. Daniel saw her folder and snatched it. He read everything and knew because we didn't tell you that we didn't want anyone to know, so he didn't tell anyone. Then today he came to the house to talk to her and tell her that he knew. That's when she passed out and Daniel brought her here," Joe said. Darren was shocked.

 "Whoa, that explains a lot," Darren said, "her baggy pants, why she stumbled a lot, everything."

 "She needs you, Darren," Joe said.

 "Is she....gonna die?" Darren said quietly.

 "She's strong," Joe said, just as quiet. "I'll leave you alone for a while." Joe left and Darren stood by a big window. He stared out the window and thought.

 "I just lost my wife, how can I afford to lose the girl I love?" he thought. He wanted to scream and deny this happening. He pinched himself to make sure he wasn't caught in a nightmare. He heard someone come up behind him. He didn't bother to turn around. A hand was placed on his shoulder.

 "Hey D," Daniel said. Darren didn't say anything. "Hm, funny, you and Delia have the same nickname," Daniel said. Darren didn't say anything. Daniel hated seeing his best friend like this. "Look Darren, she needs you. You need her, but she needs your support more than ever. You can't stay here and pity yourself, you need to be with her," Daniel said.

 "Why is this happening?" Darren asked, still looking out the window.

 "I dunno. God has a funny way of making love work. Maybe this is your test, you and Dee," Daniel said.

 "I can't loose her," Darren said.

 "Who said you were gonna?"

 "She has cancer, Daniel!" Darren said.

 "You don't think I know that?!" Daniel screamed back.

 "Ben's dad died of cancer, so did many other people," Darren shouted back.

 "And what makes you think she is like other people?" Daniel replied.

 "Daniel, you have no idea what it's like loosing someone," Darren said.

 "You know what? Maybe I don't. Maybe I don't know a thing about it. But I know it hurts, Darren! And I know that Dee is strong. And if you are gonna stand here and pity yourself, then so be it," Daniel screamed. He turned around and walked away. Darren was speechless. He turned back around and looked out the window.

 "What am I doing? Daniel’s right. She needs me," Darren told himself. He walked down the long hall of the hospital and right up to the desk.

 "May I see Delia DeKator?" Darren asked the nurse.

 "Yeah, she just woke up. She’s in room 112," she said.

 "Any word from the doctor?" he asked.

 "The cancer spread, but they underwent surgery and took out the cancer cells. They got the big ones out and now its not as infected," the nurse informed him.

 "Thank you," he said. He walked down the hall. He shivered. He hated hospitals. He found her room and knocked.

 ~~~~~
 "Come in," I said, weakly. The door opened and Darren popped in.
 "Hey there," he whispered.
 "Darren..," I said. He put his fingertips on my lips.
 "Shh....its ok. I know. Your dad told me," he said. He pulled up and chair and sighed. "Dee, I don't pity you. I love you. I really do. And I never said that to anyone before. I feel so strongly and I'm gonna be here by your side 100 percent," Darren said, as he took my hand. I smiled and he got up and kissed my cheek. He sat back down.
~~~~

Standing outside the doorway, Daniel backed up from the open door. He smiled after he heard what Darren said. Joe came up to him.

 "Is he in there?" Joe asked.

 "Yes, he is," Daniel said, smiling.
