Chapter 10
Daniel walked outside and lit
a cigarette. He hasn't has one in a long time and only smoked under pressured
situations. And this was on of them. Darren also walked outside, not knowing
Daniel was out there. He saw Daniel smoking. He walked over and sat next to him
on the bench.
"Hey D,"
Daniel said, simply, not as everything was ok, but not as everything wasn't.
"Hey Jonsey,"
Darren said. Daniel continued to smoke. Daniel held the cigarette out in front
of him and looked at it.
"I can't believe
I'm doing this. I told myself I was gonna quit. I didn't want it to ruin my
life. But it looks like I won't need it anymore," Daniel said, taking
another puff.
"Why do you say
that?" Darren asked.
"C'mon, you know
Lee, he always gets his way. And his was is....well," Daniel said.
"....to get
another Gold Album and more screaming fans," Darren finished for him.
"Yep. Looks like
we think alike D," Daniel said.
"Well, with 10
years behind us, I'm not surprised," Darren said. They looked straight
ahead, and not at each other. They both talked in a low-tone voice, not happy,
not sad. They both had anger to set off a jet plane, but kept it inside.
"That was some
pretty good swearin' in there, D," Daniel said. Darren shook his head and
sighed. "I'm proud," Daniel said.
"Well, you should
be, you swear every five seconds," Darren said. Daniel took another puff.
They sat in silence for a while.
"What's gonna
happen to us, D? Are we gonna break six years cause they wanna start the next
album to early?" Daniel asked. They still weren't looking at each other,
like they were talking to the building across the street.
"I dunno,"
Darren said, sighing. Daniel sat up straight and threw his cigarette on the
ground and dug his shoe in it.
"I'll tell ya
somethin' D, I'm with you all the way. I dunno what got into those guys, but I'm
not gonna change my mind," Daniel said. Darren smiled.
"Thanks
Danny," Darren said.
"That's Jonsey,
D," Daniel said. It started to rain, so Darren got up and walked to the
elevator.
~~~~~~~~~~
I woke up and noticed
two huge knee braces, more like contraptions, on my knees.
"Hmm...they work
while I sleep. I should call 20/20," I thought. I looked out the window,
and it was pouring rain. The nurse came in.
"Oh good, you're
up. Well, Deborah, the test came back and all the cancer cells are out and you
are A ok," she said.
"Umm...it's
Delia," I corrected. She ignored my comment.
"But the downside
is, you must wear these knee braces until you are strong enough to go without
them," she said.
"When am I going
home?" I asked.
"Probably
tomorrow," she said. She left my room and passed Darren coming in.
"Hey!" I
said, happy to see him.
"Hey," he
said. He kissed me and sat down.
"I'm A ok. I just
gotta wear these machines on my knees until I can walk, run and do anything.
That will be a while. And I'm goin' home tomorrow," I told him. I looked in
his eyes. Something was wrong and I knew it was bothering him.
"Great
honey!" he said. He got up and sat next to me on my bed. I sat up and
looked in his eyes.
"Darren, what's
wrong?" I asked.
"Nothing. Nothing
at all," he lied.
"Oh cut the crap.
Spill it," I said. He smiled.
"You see right
through me," he said. He sighed and told me everything that happened while
he was downstairs. He ran his fingers through his hair and I couldn't believe
it.
"So, you're
telling me that you refused to make the new album until I was all better and you
cussed?!" I asked, in shock.
"Yeah,"
Darren said.
"Wow," I
said, "Darren, that's the sweetest thing anyone has ever done. But I don't
wanna hold you back from your dream."
"You're not! You
did the exact opposite. My dream was to fall in love. And I did and you made
that come true. Sure I love to sing, but I rather have love than fame or music.
And besides, I had to do it for me. I had to prove it to myself," Darren
said.
"Prove what?"
"That my love for
you was gonna be my first priority," he said, looking in my eyes.
"I bet the guys
hate me now," I said.
"No, they hate ME.
But Daniel really yelled at the guys," Darren said.
"Boy, I would have
loved to see the fight," I said. Darren smiled.
"I talked to your
dad today, while you were sleeping, and he said Daniel and I can stay at your
house in your guest room. And I told him he can work at the office and I'll help
ya," Darren said. I couldn't help but smile. He ran his fingers through my
hair.
"I love you,"
he whispered.
"I love you
too," I said. Darren leaned
back as I scooted up. He got behind me and I leaned back into him. He wrapped
his arms around me and I cuddled the back of my head in his chest. Darren held
me in his muscular arms and I felt to safe. He was the best thing that ever
happened to me. The amazing part was that he gave up making a new album to stay
with me. That made me want to melt. I looked outside and realized the rain
stopped and the sun was out. I gasped.
"Darren!" I
whispered.
"Huh?" he
asked.
"Remember that
night when we danced on the beach?" I asked.
"Yeah."
"Remember the song? You're my sunshine after the rain, you're the cure against my fear and my pain...." I whispered. He smiled and got it.
"It fits," he
whispered.
"I know," I whispered. He kissed the top of my head and I we just lied there. Arm in arm.
