Chapter 17

"What are you doing?" Darren asked as he entered the kitchen of their apartment to find Daniel cleaning out the cabinets.

"Oh, I'm sorry. Did I wake you up?" Daniel asked. Darren yawned.

"Nah, I was up. Thinking," he replied.

 "Is Dee asleep?" Daniel asked.

 "Yeah," Darren answered.

"Good," Daniel said, since I haven't been able to sleep. Daniel opened the fridge door and pulled out a six-pack and dumped it all in the trashcan.

"What are you doing?" Darren asked again.

"Well, I figured that now I'm a parent, I gotta act like one. Which means no beer or cigarettes," he said, pointing to the trashcan that had his old cigarettes and beer in it.

"I thought you quit smoking," Darren said.

"I did. I just gotta get them outta here so I don't get the urge to light up," Daniel said. He started to straighten out the counter that had various papers and receipts over it. Daniel sighed and plopped down in a chair across the table from where Darren was.

"Someone bought the house," Darren informed him. We put up the house for sale since I'd be touring with them. Daniel nodded.

"I knew it'd sell quick," Daniel said, "This is gonna be so weird. Who ever thought of ME as a parent."

 "Well, I'm here," Darren said.

"Yeah, but you're the boyfriend. Not the parent. I'm the parent. I love Dee, but this is gonna be a wild ride," Daniel said.

"When is she going back to school?" Darren asked, since my dad couldn't tutor me anymore.

"She starts Tuesday. I called and checked it out," Daniel said. Darren nodded.

 "Darren?" Daniel asked.

 "Hmmm?"

"I'm so afraid I'm gonna be a terrible parent. I mean, when I was her age, I was so wild. I pity my mom," Daniel said.

"Jonsey, you'll be a great dad. I've known you for ten years and wouldn't say that to just anyone," Darren said.

 "Thanks D."

The next day, I woke up in my new room. I moved into the apartment and in the extra room. Daniel, Darren and I became a family. I was starting school in a week, and was really nervous about it. I hadn't seen everyone in almost a year. I was the first one up and I got dressed and walked out to the pier. It was a little farther away than it used to be, but at least I could go to it.

I got to the pier and sat on the sand. I looked out into the ocean. There weren't that many people there that day, but I did see someone in the corner of my eye. It was a young dad and his son. They were running around and having a great time. The dad picked up his son, who looked like he was 6, and placed him on his shoulders. I smiled as I watched them and a tear came to my eye. I wiped it away. The wind was cold, since it was January, and we were lucky it wasn't snowing.

"Hey," I heard someone say behind me. I turned around to see Daniel. I smiled and he sat down next to me.

 "Nice day, 'eh?" he asked.

"Yeah, it is," I said. He turned and faced me.

 "Are you okay?" he asked.

"I will be. I just don't understand thought. I mean, I lost my best friend, my everything," I said, looking out at the ocean.

"I know how you feel. I grew up with that feeling since I never saw my dad," Daniel said.

"Yeah, but you had a mom," I said.

"True. But you have us," Daniel said. I looked at him and slightly smiled.

"Daniel, I dunno what I would have done if I never met you guys," I said.

"I know. I feel the same way about you," Daniel said, "and so does Darren."

"Where is Darren anyways?" I asked.

"Sleeping," he said. I smiled and laughed.

 "Figures," I said.

 "Dee?" he asked.

 "Yeah?"

"I know I'm not your dad, and I never will be. No one can compare to him, but I love you like a sister. We are gonna make this family work. I promise," Daniel said.

"Thanks Daniel," I said, smiling. He got up and helped me up.

"C'mon, lets go wake D up," Daniel said. We walked back to the apartment and he was still sleeping. Daniel laughed and got a pillow and slammed it in his face. Darren just groaned and rolled over.

"Betcha 20 bucks I can wake him up," I said to Daniel.

 "10."

 "15."

 "5."

"Deal," I said, since I didn't have 20 bucks. I leaned over and pressed my lips against Darren's and kissed him. He woke up and kissed me back. He sat up.

"Now THAT'S a wakeup call!" Darren said, smiling. I laughed and he grabbed my waist and pulled me down so I was sitting next to him on the bed.

 "NO FAIR!!" Daniel said.

 "Hahahaha," I laughed, "told cha."

"There's no way in hell I was gonna do that, so you win," Daniel said, fishing out 5 bucks and handing it to me.

"Thank you, thank you," I said, smiling at my new family.
