Chapter 19

"GONZO!! NO!! NOT THE REMOTE!!!!" Daniel screamed as he tugged the remote from my puppy's mouth. "Here D," he said, as he tossed it to Darren.

 "YUCK! Dog slobber!" Darren said, wiping his hand. I opened my door and walked out to them.

 "Ok, I'm ready," I said. I had on my soccer shirt and Adidas warm-up pants. I had my hair barretted back and had on my soccer shoes and shin pads under my pants. It was Saturday and Daniel and Darren were gonna help me become the soccer star I used to be.

 "Ok MEN! Our mission- to bring her back to the soccer star she was!" Darren said. Daniel pretended to salute to Darren.

 "Off to the park!" Daniel said as Darren grabbed the keys. They shoved me out the door.

 "Wait...," I tried to say, but they wouldn't listen. Darren shut the door.

 "Ok, let's go," Daniel said. I stood there with my hands on my hips.

 "Good job soccer masters," I said.

 "What?" Darren asked.

 "YOU FORGOT THE BALL!" I screamed. Daniel and Darren lightly blushed and Daniel slipped in the door and grabbed the ball.

 "Hehehee....I knew that," Daniel said.

~~~~~~~~
 I collapsed on the ground, trying to catch my breath.
 "5 minutes. Not bad for the mile," Darren said.
 "How fast do you have to run it?" Daniel said, as they stood on the track in the part.
 "4.8 minutes," Darren said.
 "One more time," I said, standing up, drinking out of my water bottle.
 "Dee...you already ran the mile 3 times today," Daniel said.
 "Did I make 4.8? NO! One more time!" I said again. I got up and Daniel and Darren glanced at each other. I was sweating and it was freezing outside. I started and ran as fast as I could.
~~~~

 "I hate to see her like this," Darren said.

 "I know, but she has determination," Daniel said, as they watched me run.

 "Do you think she's pushing herself too hard?" Darren asked.

 "I dunno," Daniel said.

 "Do you think we shouldn't let her?" Darren asked.

 "I dunno," Daniel said, as I plopped down, completely out of breath.

~~~~~
 "What time?" I choked out.
 "4.5," Darren answered. I breathed a sigh of relief and chugged down water.
 "Dee, are you ok?" Daniel asked.
 "I'm fine," I replied, "Ok, drill time." I said as I took the ball and began to dribble it.
 We worked for the rest of the day and I was getting better. We decided to come back the next Saturday and do the same thing. We got home and I took a shower. I got dressed and walked out of the bathroom. I sat next to Darren and he wrapped his arm around me.
 "So, what do you wanna do tonight?" he asked.
 "Sleep," I answered. He laughed.
 "Ok, we can order pizza and rent a movie and just stay here," he said.
 "Ok," I said, smiling. "Gonna join us Daniel?" I asked.
 "Might as well," he said. He ordered a pizza and we went out and rented Armageddon while we picked up the pizza. We went back and devoured it and watched the movie. I looked outside. It was dark, but there was a lot of light out by the pier.
 "Guys, I'm gonna go run," I said, getting up.
 "There's no light," Darren said.
 "There is by the pier. The whole beach is lit up," I said.
 "Are you sure you're not too tired?" Daniel asked.
 "Nope, it feels good to finally run again," I said. They agreed and I got my Adidas suit on and left.
 ~~~~~~~~~~

 "Do you think she's pushing too far?" Darren asked again.

 "I wanna say no, but it'd be lying," Daniel said. Darren nodded.

 "I want to stop her, she shouldn't even be running. What if her knee gives up? But I don't want to hold her back, I love her too much," Darren said.

 "I know what you mean. She's been through so much, I'd hate to step in and make her stop," Daniel agreed.

 "What do we do?" Darren asked.

 "I dunno," Daniel said.

 ~~~~~~~~~
 I ran across the beach in the cold night as I thought about everything from when I was diagnosed to this night. I wanted to run faster, and I pushed myself, but my legs wouldn't respond. I kept running and felt a needle like pain run through my knee. I ignored it and kept running. It got worse and I knew I should stop, but I wasn't going to give in. I wasn't going to let the cancer win. Not after what it did to me. The anger made me run faster. The pain took over my whole leg. Tears swelled up in my eyes and I collapsed on the beach. I began to bawl as I held my leg in pain. "WHY?! It’s not fair! The cancer destroyed my life! I can't even run!" I screamed at myself.
 ~~~~~~~

 Darren jolted up.

 "Oh my God," he said.

 "What?" Daniel asked.

 "Something happened to Dee," he said, as he got up and grabbed his coat.

 "What?! How do you know?" Daniel asked, getting up.

 "I know. When you love someone this much, you just know. We feel each other's pain," Darren said, jetting out the door with Daniel close behind. They ran to the pier and ran along the beach looking for Delia. They spotted her lying down and crying. Darren flew by her side.

 ~~~~~~
 "Oh my God! Are you ok Dee?" Darren asked me. He helped me sit up. He took his hand and wiped my tears away.
 "My knee gave in," I said, bawling.
 "We gotta get you home," Daniel said. Darren picked me up and carried me back to the apartment. We got there and Daniel got my ice bag. It began to swell up.
 "I hate this!!" I screamed, "Why did this happen to me?! I can't even run!!" I screamed. Darren embraced me and I cried in his shirt. For the first time in my life, I realized I wasn't going to be ok. I finally realized that soccer was over and I was not healthy. I realized I would never be able to do the stuff I used to do. I gave in. The cancer won.
 When that all hit me at once, it made my tears more heavy. I cried for hours. Daniel and Darren did their best to comfort me, but it didn't help. I didn't get it. Why did I lead myself on for so long? Why did I think I could do it when I really couldn't? All these thoughts swam through my head as I cried. I wanted to go to my room and be alone, but I couldn't walk there. I just laid in Darren's arms and cried.
