Chapter 20
"Doctor?" Darren
asked, as he knocked on the door.
"Come in,"
Dr. Malone said, Delia's doctor.
"Hi. I'm Darren
Hayes. I'm Delia DeKator's boyfriend," he said, shaking the doctor's hand.
Darren sat down and explained the whole situation to the doctor.
"So, what you want
to know is when can she play soccer again?" he asked, after Darren
explained.
"Yes," Darren
said, hopefully. The doctor sighed and leaned back in his chair.
He scratched his chin
and said, "Well, with her condition, I'm forced to say...never," he
said.
"WHAT?!"
Darren screamed, jumping up. He calmed down and said- "Not at all?"
"I'm afraid
not," the doctor said, "her legs are too weak. If they can't hold the
pressure of running, then soccer is out of the question."
"Thank you
Doctor," Darren said. He sighed, got up, and left the room.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Hello?"
"DANIEL!"
"KARL! Omigod!
What's up buddy?!" Daniel asked. The phone had rung and Daniel picked it up
since Dee was still sleeping and Darren went to her doctor.
"Not much! We miss
you guys! It ain't the same without you dragging us to Mickey D's every five
seconds!" Karl said. Daniel laughed.
"Well, it ain't
the same without you complaining about my beloved Mickey D's!" Daniel said
back. They talked for a couple minutes.
"So, how's
Dee?" Karl asked.
"She...well...she's
been better," Daniel said.
"Why?" Karl
asked, concerned. Daniel told him the whole story.
"Wow, that’s all
I can say," Karl said, after he heard what happened.
"Darren is at the
doctor right now to see if she can play," Daniel said.
"Is she getting
along well in school?"
"No, we're
thinking about pulling her out and hiring a tutor," Daniel said.
"Wow," Karl
said again, "Well, Hey! I called to tell you guys that we're comin' up to
visit!" Karl said, with a happy tone.
"Great! We have
enough room for you all, so that will be sweet!" Daniel said.
"Don't tell Dee.
We wanna surprise her," Karl said.
"Gottcha,"
Daniel said.
"So, how's
Boston?" Karl asked. Daniel talked to him for about an hour before they
hung up.
~~~~~~~
I woke up and walked
into the living room, seeing Daniel place the phone down.
"Hey sleepy
head!" Daniel greeted me.
"Morning," I
said, "where's Darren?"
"He had to run an
errand," Daniel said. I nodded. "Want some breakfast?"
"I was gonna make
a pop tart," I said.
"Oh, that’s
cool," Daniel said. I ate my pop tart and Daniel watched me.
"Wanna go for a
jog?" he asked when I was finished. I looked at him.
"Get real," I
said.
"Why not? Just
cause you fell once doesn't mean you'll fall again," Daniel said.
"I don't want to.
I'm quitting soccer," I said. Daniel’s eyes widened.
"You're giving
up?" he asked, quietly.
"Yep," I
answered.
"Dee, you can't
give up!" Daniel said.
"Look at me! I
can't run without pain!" I screamed.
"Since when have
you ever quit anything?!" Daniel screamed.
"Since I got
cancer!" I screamed back. I plopped down in the chair.
"You don't get it
Daniel. No one does. You have no idea what its like not to able to do the thing
you love," I said, quietly.
"I know Dee, and I
realize that. But I can't stand here and watch you give up," Daniel said,
sitting down.
~~~A couple days
later~~~
"...You know you
could always go on Ricki Lake! The world needs wanna be's so HEY! HEY! Do that
freaky thing! Now he’s getting a tattoo, ya, he gettin it done, he asked a 13
but they drew a 31...." Offspring's new song was blasting in my ear as I
hid my earphones. I had them on during History and since I sit in the back, it
works. The teacher looked at me and walked to my desk. I took my headphones off.
"Why are you
listening to music in my class?" she asked me.
"Cause I already
learned this," I answered.
"Pay attention
anyways," she said.
"Why? I'll just
get bored and loose my attention span and then forgetting everything
altogether," I said back.
"Listen, or
detention," she said.
"Why are you
punishing me because I'm ahead and acing your class?" I asked. They bell
rung and I flew out the door before she could catch me. I got my coat and walked
out to the parking lot. I looked for Darren but I couldn't find him. I heard a
horn honk and I turned around.
"Hey Dee!"
someone shouted. My attention caught to the guy who was waving his arms.
"Karl!" I
screamed. I ran to the car. He hugged me. "What are you doing here?!"
I asked. He smiled.
"Surprise! Lee and
Ben are at the apartment, so I though I'd pick you up and we could go do
something," he said. I smiled.
"Wow, that’s so
cool!" I said, sliding into the passenger seat. He got in the driver's seat
and started the car. Karl drove out of the school parking lot and on the street.
I turned on the radio and found a good station.
"So, how's
school?" he asked. I looked at him.
"Well, I'm ahead
in all my classes, my friends hate me, and I can't play soccer," I said.
"I'll take that as
an 'I hate it!'" Karl said.
"That's a better
way of putting it, isn't it?" I asked. Karl smiled.
"I was thinkin',
let's spend some time together. Just you and me," he said.
"I'd like
that," I said, smiling.
"Ok, then, where
to?" he asked.
"Hmm...I dunno.
You pick," I said.
"Well, I was
driving around before I came and got you and I did see a cool place," Karl
said.
"Go for it,"
I said. We drove for a couple minutes and Karl pulled up at a park that had a
basketball court. I laughed.
"I should have
known," I said. He smiled and reached in his back seat and popped out a
basketball.
"C'mon 3D,"
he said. We got out of the car and he tossed the ball to me.
"I can't," I
said, passing it back to him.
"Oh c'mon,
everyone can play," Karl said.
"I can't run
Karl," I said.
"I know, but this
will get you back on your feet," Karl said. He did a lay up.
"Don't you get it?
I'm hopeless," I said. I sat on the roof of the car. Karl looked at me in
disbelief.
"Dee, you're NOT
hopeless. Understand me? You're gonna get better. You're a fighter," Karl
said, looking in my eyes. He lifted me off the car.
"Here, start slow.
Do a lay up," he said. I looked at him. He smiled. I sighed and went for
it. I made it in.
"See! I told you!
All you have to do is take it one day at a time," he said. I smiled.
"Thanks
Karl," I said.
"No prob 3D,"
he said.
