Chapter 22
I stood there in shock. I was
looking right at my mother. The woman who gave birth to me. Also the woman who
abandoned me my whole life. I wanted to scream, cry, and run to my dad. But I
was alone. As she looked at me, tears filled her eyes.
"Delia?" she
asked, quietly. I looked at her.
"That's me,"
I said. What was I supposed to say? 'That's me Mommy?' I think not. She gasped.

"What is taking
Dee so long?" Daniel asked.
"I dunno. Let's go
get her," Darren said. They walked to the baggage claim and saw Delia
looking at her mom.
"Uh oh,"
Daniel said.
~~~~~~~~~
My mother opened her
arms.
"Can I hug
you?" she asked, with tearful eyes.
"No," I
answered sharply and flatly. I saw Darren and Daniel come up behind me. They sat
down in chairs near us.
"Delia..."
she started to say.
"Ya know, don't
even bother," I said.
"Honey, I haven't
seen you in 15 years," she said.
"Try 16. And don't
call me honey," I said.
"Ok. Wow, you've
grown," she said.
"Yeah, kids
usually don't stay 7 pounds their whole life," I said. She saw the cold and
bitterness in my eyes toward her.
"Can we sit down
and talk?" she asked.
"There is nothing
to talk about! You abandoned me for 16 years and you come back and expect me to
forgive and forget?! I don't know a thing about you!! You didn't even care
enough to send a card on Christmas or my birthday! A card! A card that takes 5
minutes and now you wanna talk?!" I screamed. She looked at me and started
to look around behind me.
"Where's your
father?" she asked. I narrowed my eyes as anger overflowed my body.
"DAD IS
DEAD!" I screamed. She gasped. "And don't even pretend you care cause
if you did, you would have kept in touch. Dad raised me all by himself and did a
better job than most parents I know."
"I'm sorry,"
she said.
"That doesn't cut
it," I said.
"If your dad died,
who do you live with?" she asked.
"Me," Daniel
said, interrupting as he stood up. Darren got up and stood by my side. I grabbed
his hand. "I adopted her," Daniel said.
"Who are
you?" she asked.
"A friend,"
Daniel answered.
"Don't you think
Delia needs to be with her mother?" she asked Daniel. I couldn't believe
she said that.
"No! I don't have
a mother! My mother abandoned me! I didn't have a mother to tuck me in, tell me
stories, brush my hair, take me shopping, talk about boys, teach me to be a
woman. You were never a mother to me and you never will be," I said
harshly.
"You are NOT gonna
take Delia away from us!" Daniel screamed harshly and madly.
"I want to get to
know you Delia," she said.
"Well, you're
about 16 years late. I don't wanna see you, talk to you, or even be in 100 feet
of you ever again!" I screamed.
"But..
but...," she started.
"But nothing.
That's the way it has always been and how it will always be. I'm sorry you gave
up on me, but it's not gonna make me crawl back to you. I never want to see you
again," I said, harshly. I grabbed my book bag and walked out the door with
Darren and Daniel close behind. We got into the car and I slid in the back seat.
Darren sat next to me. We sat in silence for about 5 minutes when I burst in
tears. Darren embraced me and comforted me.
"I hate her,
Darren," I sobbed.
"Shhh...everything's
ok. I'm here. It's all over," he said. Daniel stopped the car and sat on
the other side of me.
"Dee, everything
will be ok," he said, comforting me. I sat up and Darren wiped my tears away.
"You have us Dee, we promise," Darren whispered. I sank into his arms and we sat there, Darren holding me and Daniel with his arms around me. For the first time, we realized we were a family. We were connected. As I sat there, I realized I was very lucky. I had the two greatest guys in the world.
