“And I’d give up forever to touch you
‘Cause I know that you feel me somehow
You're the closest to heaven that I’ll ever be
And I don't want to go home right now”

Nikita wiped her tears away from her eyes as she sat down on the edge of the bed and looked at him peacefully sleeping in the darkness of the room, the soft silk covers wrapped around his body like a shroud. ‘I miss you so much,’ she thought as another tear escaped her eyes. She didn’t want to be there that night, but she had been ordered to.

Darren suddenly turned with a grunt and scared her. She jumped off the bed hoping that he hadn’t noticed her. ‘I’m so stupid. He can’t see me. I’m an angel for crying out loud,’ her mind screamed as she sat back down on the bed. Darren began to mumble inaudible things in his sleep. She tried to listen to what he was saying, but it was so soft and blurred that she couldn’t make out a single word.

“Nikita!” Darren finally yelled, startling her even more. He shot up and looked around the room, panting heavily from the horrifying dream that he had just moments before. There was no one there, just the moonlight filtering through the open window across the bed. “Nikita,” Darren whispered, breaking down as he put his head in his hands.

Nikita scooted closer to him and placed her hand on his back. Darren could feel something touching him and instantly turned around to see what it was. Only the headboard of the bed was behind him. Still, the sensation of someone’s hand on his back haunted him until he stood up and began pacing the room. His heart was racing. Could he be imagining this? This had been the third time it had happened in the last three nights.

“I’m going crazy,” Darren mumbled as he sat back down on his bed and looked over at the clock, 3:00 AM.

“No, you’re not,” a voice suddenly said from behind him. Darren turned sharply to see the girl that materialized instantly in front of his face. The one feature that stood out was her eyes, majestic blue with the slightest hint of emerald green.

Darren screamed as he jumped back on the bed. She stepped closer, her pale white skin made even paler in the silvery moonlight that spilled from the window. “This is not happening. It can’t be happening. I’m not having a mental breakdown,” he mumbled as he stared at her with absolute terror in his eyes.

“Don’t be afraid,” she whispered. “It’s just me, Nikita.”

“But you’re dead!” Darren shouted. “You can’t be in my room. You’re supposed to be in a coffin in a cemetery far away from here.”

“I am, it’s just that I was sent here to help you cope with my death,” Nikita replied.

“Oh, God! I’m seeing ghosts!” he howled.

“No, Darren, I’m an angel. And you’re not going crazy. Once this is over, you’ll never remember it even happening,” she tried to explain. “God sent me here. I missed you so much that I wanted to see you. I didn’t know I’d be the one helping you.”

Darren calmed down considerably, but still was unsure about what he was seeing. He blinked a couple of times to make sure that his eyes weren’t deceiving, and surely enough she was as real as anything in his room.

“And all I can taste is this moment
And all I can breathe is your life
‘Cause sooner or later it’s over
I just don’t want to miss you tonight”

“I’m not supposed to be appearing like this, but I don’t care. I miss you so much, and I know you miss me too. Just talk to me, please. Don’t be the quiet one. I was that in our relationship and now I regret it,” Nikita continued to explain. “I’m so sorry for being so closed off. I didn’t know I’d get hit by a car and die. If I had the time, everything would have been different.”

Darren sat up and stared at her as she cried before him. She seemed so real, but he knew that this had to be a dream. She was gone, taken by a drunk driver only six weeks earlier on Valentine’s Day. His heart had been smashed into a million little peaces the moment he found out. He had never experienced such a loss in his life, and it being on a day that was meant for love and affection, her cursed the stupid holiday for all eternity.

“What do you mean ‘different?’” Darren cautiously asked.

“I mean, I would have told you I loved you before out six month anniversary,” Nikita sadly replied. “Because I did love you, so much. You were my world for those five and a half months we were together.”

“I was?” he questioned.

“Yes, you were.” Her eyes filled with more tears as she let her head drop.

“And I don’t want the world to see me
‘Cause I don’t think that they’d understand
When everything’s made to be broken
I just want you to know who I am”

Darren moved closer to her, his hand gently reaching for hers. Nikita could feel his fingers brush up against hers, then tangle between them. It felt so warm and wonderful to be touched that way again. He stood up and lifted her chin with his hand. They stared into each other’s eyes, the moment unable to escape them. He leaned in and softly pressed his lips against hers.

Nikita wanted to keep her lips pressed up against his for the rest of the night, but pulled away when she realized she shouldn’t be doing this. “No, I can’t,” she said, her voice shaky with fear and anger.

“Why?” Darren asked.

“Because I’m not supposed to. I’ve already broken enough rules. I don’t need to be breaking anymore,” Nikita answered.

“And you can’t fight the tears that ain’t coming
Or the moment of truth in your lies
When everything feels like the movies
Yeah you bleed just to know you’re alive”

“Nikita,” Darren whispered as he took her into his arms. “I forgot to tell you this, but I love you too.”

Her head shot up to meet his eyes again. “Do you really mean that or are you just saying it to make me feel better.”

“I really mean it. I loved you and always will,” he replied, brushing a strand of her long auburn hair away from her face. He kissed her again and smiled as he let go.

Nikita held onto Darren for what seemed like hours. Her place was in his arms, not heaven. It had to have been a mistake, letting her die the way she had. “I don’t wanna go,” she cried. “I don’t wanna leave you alone again. I wanna stay here.”

“Then stay. Nothing’s stopping you,” Darren said.

“God is stopping me,” Nikita sharply retorted.

“At least stay the night,” he begged, pulling her closer to the bed.

“No, I can’t…” her voice trailed off the moment his lips fell onto hers. Darren pulled Nikita into his bed. Her mind filled with memories of her time with him, and nothing was going to take this moment away from her. She didn’t care about consequences, she cared about living her life to its fullest before having to depart for someplace better. She knew this was her last chance to be with Darren and took it.

“And I don’t want the world to see me
‘Cause I don't think that they’d understand
When everything’s made to be broken
I just want you to know who I am”

Nikita could feel his hand pry the clothes from off her back and over her head to reveal her satin soft skin beneath them. His lips traveled down her naked body until they reached her breasts. He sucked on each nipple for a few seconds before finishing his tour down her abdomen to the lining of her pants. He pulled them down with a swift motion and threw them across the floor. She could feel the passion pulsing throughout her veins as his teeth sank into the soft tissue of her inner thigh.

“Darren,” Nikita moaned as he came back up to her lips. They kissed each other until both were out of breath. She grabbed his shirt and pulled it over his head. The need to feel his body within hers had grown.

“And I don’t want the world to see me
‘Cause I don't think that they’d understand
When everything’s made to be broken
I just want you to know who I am”

Darren could feel her tense muscles work to pull his pants off until they were both naked, lying on the bed, waiting for the other to start. He lay on top of her and kissed her waiting lips. Nikita, on the other hand, pulled him closer until he was pressed up against her body, his warm chest heaving with hers as.

As if he had deemed her ready, he pulled her close and pushed his throbbing erection deep into her. As he entered she cried out in pure pleasure. He lifted himself, slightly surprised by the way she was acting. Normally she was very sweet and quiet. She quickly pulled him back down onto her. He pushed in and out of her slowly at first but gradually faster and faster. She could hear him breathing harder and harder, he was close. She tightened her self around him.

“Oh god!” he screamed. “I...I'm going to...”

She arched up into him and they both came, screaming each other’s names. After many moans of pleasure he collapsed beside her, exhausted. Nikita then crawled up and rested her head on his chest. Darren kissed the top of her head softly.

“That was amazing,” he whispered.

Nikita just nodded in agreement. She then laid her head back onto his chest and listened to his breathing slowly but surely evening out. They held each other close, just enjoying the moment, not thinking about the consequences. Eventually Darren fell asleep, a content smile creeping onto his face.

“And I don’t want the world to see me
‘Cause I don’t think that they’d understand
When everything’s made to be broken
I just want you to know who I am”

Nikita stood from the bed and found her clothes on the floor. After putting them on, she went over to Darren and gently kissed his forehead. “Goodbye,” she whispered into his ear then disappeared the same way she had appeared.

Darren woke up the next morning feeling better than all the other mornings since Nikita’s death. He stared out the window to see the sun shining through and hear the birds chirping outside on the balcony. As he sat up in bed, he realized his clothes were scattered on the floor. Was last night really a dream? He’d never know.
