Author’s Note: Well, I’ve been working on my big novels for a long time, and I just needed a break from them, so I wrote this little story as a side thing. Besides, it’ll be good to use in my creative writing class some time this semester. Look forward to a few more of these little stories in the future with other different song titles.

Disclaimers: I don’t own Savage Garden or “Hero,” so don’t bite my head off about it.

So, onto the fic…

She stood in the center of the garden, her auburn locks gently swaying in the wind like the branches of a willow tree and mixing with the sweet scents of the flowering buds of spring. Her emerald green eyes scanned the rest of the park waiting for him to arrive. She had been standing there in her lavender dress for over twenty minutes. Another anxious glance surveyed the park again before she finally let her eyes fall to the neatly laid red bricks at her feet.

‘I know I’m way too early,’ Sari thought as she unconsciously walked over to the wooden bench at the bend in the path and sat down. ‘But he knows I’m always early. He should have been here by now.’

At the other end of the park, another human figure strolled down the red brick path. He unhurriedly made his way towards Sari careful not to make any sudden movements that could attract her attention. He stopped. His sapphire blue eyes surveyed the area to make sure no one else was around. Satisfied, he began to walk again towards Sari, the wind gently blowing a few sandy blond strands of his hair into his eyes.

“Would you dance if I asked you to dance?
Or would you run, and never look back?
Would you cry if you saw me crying?
Would you save my soul tonight?”

The man slowly crept up behind Sari and placed his warm, gentle hands upon her bear back. She looked up, startled that someone had caught her by surprise. A smile curled up at the corners of her mouth when she recognized the man.

“Darren! What took you so long?” Sari asked as she stood up to face him.

“A little anticipation never hurt anyone,” Darren replied, his strong Australian accent becoming prevalent. His hands reached for hers and pulled her in for a soft, passionate kiss. “You look just as beautiful as I last saw you.”

“Thank you,” Sari said as she clung to Darren’s black suit. “I missed you.”

“I missed you, too,” he answered placing another delicate kiss on her lips.

“Would you tremble if I touched your lips?
Would you laugh? Oh please tell me this.
Would you die for the one you loved?
Hold me in your arms tonight.”

Sari shuddered as she released her hold on Darren. This on again off again relationship of theirs was taking a hefty toll on her. She couldn’t stand being away from him longer than a couple of seconds, but she knew there was no way to be together with the other watching. She thought of all those long months they spent apart while he was on tour and she was working. Then she thought about those few precious days that they spent together, each one more wonderful than the last. It had only taken her a couple of weeks to realize she was in love with him. She shuddered again at the thought of him leaving.

Darren felt the uncontrollable vibrations of Sari’s body and pulled her into a tight embrace. He knew what she was going through. He had also been deprived of her loving warmth for too long. It made touring unbearable, her waiting at home while he ventured the world. It was amazing that they had made it past the one-year mark with the little amount of time they spent together. But with the long phone conversations, and even longer letters, everything was perfect between them.

“I can be your hero, baby.
I can kiss away the pain.
I will stand by you forever.
You can take my breath away.”

“Why do we have to hide like this?” Sari whispered into his ear.

Darren tenderly lifted her chin up with his hand and stared into the pools of emerald green that were her eyes. “We don’t have to,” he whispered back with a wayward smile. “Anymore.”

Sari furrowed her brow. “You told them?” she asked, the surprised written all over her face. She knew that they would never approve of their love, and the fact that Darren would even tell them struck her as odd. She had known of the previous relationships he had and how the band struck them down with one blow, but theirs was different. Theirs was pure in every sense of the word.

“Yes,” Darren said as if the question didn’t faze him.

“What did they say?” Sari kept questioning. She knew something was up, but she couldn’t put her finger on the exact feeling that was sticking out among the others.

“They weren’t that hot about the idea at first, but after some explaining, I warmed them up,” Darren answered. A smile crawled onto Sari’s lips as she rested her head on his chest.

“Would you swear that you'll always be mine?
Or would you lie? Would you run and hide?
Am I in too deep? Have I lost my mind?
I don't care, you're here tonight.”

“I love you, Darren,” Sari’s muffled voice came from his chest. Darren’s sapphire eyes stared down at her as he pushed a strand of her auburn hair away from her forehead and gently kissed her. He slowly pulled away and gestured for her to sit down on the wooden bench. Sari did what he asked without hesitation.

Darren sat down and smiled. His sapphire eyes meshed with her emerald green ones, and for a moment that seemed like it lasted forever, they stared into each other’s gaze, unmoving, unblinking. Just staring with pure, untamed love.

Sari glanced down at Darren’s hand breaking the gaze in utter curiosity. She sensed there was another reason for this midday rendezvous. A small red velvet box had appeared in his hands as if by magic.

“Darren, you’re not…” Sari’s voice trailed off when he opened the box to reveal the beautiful one-karat diamond engagement ring inside. He slipped the ring onto her delicate finger then pulled her hand to his lips and kissed it. Sari drew her other hand up to her mouth to cover the wide smile that appeared across her face. She couldn’t believe what was happening to her.

“Darren, I can’t…” she started again before he interrupted her.

“I haven’t even asked you my question and already you’re saying no. Hear me out, Sari,” Darren pleaded as his fingers tangled with hers. “Marry me, Sari. I love you. I need you. You’re the only person who’s been able to keep my life from falling apart, especially after Colby and I divorced. You’ve been my best friend for the last four years. And I know you’re my soul mate.”

Sari tried to hold back the tears spilling over the rims of her eyes, but ended up letting them drip in a slow, steady stream down her face. Darren gently wiped them away with his thumb as he waited for her answer. Another smile penetrated her lips as she finally whispered, “Yes.” Darren leaned in and kissed her. The whole day had been a success.

“I can be your hero, baby.
I can kiss away the pain.
I will stand by your forever.
You can take my breath away.”
